Honors, achievements

* Five area high school seniors were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists Wednesday. Nina Scheibe, Janna Trautwein and Josh Wen of Cape Girardeau Central High School, and Grant Eudy and John McLain of Notre Dame Regional High School were among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide. The students will compete for 8,200 National Merit scholarships that will be offered in the spring.

* Austin Greer received the 2009 Bulldog Award given to senior athletes at Notre Dame Regional High School.

* Alex Fowler received the 2009 Lady Bulldog Award given to senior athletes at Notre Dame Regional High School.
