James Michael Jansen, a graduate of Leopold High School, has won a $2,000 MFA Foundation scholarship that was awarded during the school's recent graduation ceremonies. Jansen, son of Mary and Ambrose Jansen, plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University. The scholarship was sponsored by SEMO MFA Agri Services in Advance, Mo.
Gabriel Eggers, 2009 valedictorian at Jackson High School, graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a degree in geosciences and the Planets & Life certificate. Eggers will be employed by the Princeton Department of Geosciences as a research specialist continuing research on the planet Venus. He plans to attend graduate school and pursue a Ph.D. in planetary science. Ryan P. Harper received his doctorate in religion from Princeton University and he will be teaching at Princeton for the coming academic year. Harper is a 1996 graduate of Jackson High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in English from Southeast Missouri State University in 2000 and a master of arts degree in English from Southeast in 2002. He received his master of theological studies degree from Duke University in 2006. Princeton University is located in Princeton, N.J.
Cassidy Brown, a recent graduate of Cape Central High School, has been awarded the President's Scholarship from Southeast Missouri State University. Brown is the daughter of Brian and Terri Brown of Cape Girardeau. Other area recipients of the President's Scholarship are Holly Blackburn of Sikeston, Mo., Julie Colbert of Sikeston, Alex Elsey of Sikeston, Caleb Long of Marble Hill, Mo. and Jacqulyn Ward of Fredericktown, Mo.
The Jackson School District is conducting its summer-school program from May 29 to June 19. Districtwide, 1,388 students are participating with 604 students in the elementary program being held at South Elementary School. The elementary program has a "Wizard of Oz" theme and is being offered at no cost to students in the school district. The summer-school program is also taking place at the Jackson Middle School, Jackson Junior High School and Jackson High School. Amy Robinson of Jackson was named to the dean's list for the spring 2013 semester at Southwestern College. Full-time students who earned a grade-point averages of at least 3.7 were eligible for the honor. Southwestern College is located in Winfield, Kan., and is a private institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Four area students graduated from Maryville University with honors during spring commencement ceremonies on May 4. Jared Smith of Cape Girardeau graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Maryville's School Of Business; Geoffrey Enders of Jackson graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree; Katie Loos of Jackson graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree; and Kyle Reynolds of Whitewater graduated with a bachelor of science from Maryville's School of Health Professions. Maryville University is located in St. Louis.
