Awards and Achievements

* The following local students received Academic Achievement Awards at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, for the Spring 2014 semester: Krista Cartwright and Jennifer Myracle of Cape Girardeau; Karen McCall of Jackson; Valerie Carlson of Patton, Missouri; Sarah Lincoln of Glenallen, Missouri; and Amanda Byrd and Brenda McKown of Sikeston, Missouri.

In order to be eligible for the Academic Achievement Awards, a student must be enrolled full-time, have a 4.0 grade-point average for the semester and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

* Ryan May, Alex Gentle, Cody Turner and Maxwell Abbott, all from Central High School, participated in the 75th edition of the American Legion Boys State of Missouri program, June 14 through 21 at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Each student was nominated by his high school based on his leadership, citizenship, academics and character. Established in 1938, Missouri Boys State is a youth leadership and citizenship training program for high school juniors.

Students from this district were sponsored by American Legion Post 63 and a total of 93 attended this year.

During the eight-day program, students experienced government through a hands-on learning approach, enhance their leadership skills and develop an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

Nearly 1,000 student leaders build a state government in a week.

Through their participation and completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for two or three hours of university credit and scholarships provided by colleges and universities throughout the nation.

* Samantha Coleman of Jonesboro, Illinois, graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor of science in the university's College of Health and Human Sciences.

* Mia Philomena Pohlman of Perryville, Missouri, graduated magna cum laude from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, with a bachelor of arts degree in English with a concentration in writing, and minors in photography and African-American studies. Pohlman is the daughter of Paul and Jane Pohlman and is a graduate of Perryville High School. Pohlman will teach in Greece for the 2014-2015 school year as part of a Fulbright teaching fellowship.

In order to graduate magna cum laude, a student must achieve at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

Dean's and president's list

* Claire Herbst of Cape Girardeau was named to the spring 2014 semester dean's list at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to earn this honor.

* Emma Basler, a junior from Anna, Illinois, was named to the president's list at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. Basler achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the spring 2014 semester.

Scholarships

* The following local students received scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2014-2015 academic year: Joshua Friedrich of Jackson, Jacob Koenig of Burfordville and Whitney Welker of Patton, Illinois.

* James "Bo" Crain Wilferth, a Central High School graduate, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Wilferth received the scholarship through the Cape Girardeau Public Schools Foundation in conjunction with P&G MPT (Mission Possible Team) for an engineering scholarship. This is a one-time scholarship to a graduating senior going into the engineering field.
