  • Katerra Jarrett, a kindergarten student at Meridian Elementary in Mounds, Ill., won a National Children's Dental Health Month coloring contest sponsored by the Illinois State Dental Society. Her picture was chosen from more than 12,000 entries.
  • Dr. Marcia Nahikian-Nelms, a professor at Southeast Missouri State University, has been nominated for the Missouri Council on Public Higher Education's Teacher of the Year award. Fifteen professors from 13 universities across Missouri have been nominated. Nahikian-Nelms is a professor of nutrition and dietetics in the Department of Human Environmental Studies and director of the didactic program in dietetics at Southeast.
  • Bill Rader of Cape Girardeau will receive the 2008 Legacy Award from the University of the Ozarks Alumni Association on April 19 in Clarksville, Ark. The award recognizes a "lifetime of unselfish giving." Rader is from the class of 1942.
  • Twenty-four students from Eagle Ridge Christian School in Cape Girardeau placed at an Association of Christian Schools International Art Festival held Feb. 12 in St. Louis. Student winners were Austin Estes, Hudson McVay, Sarah Jackson, Thomas Mills, Abigail Blunt, Brendon Lewis, Kaitlyn Todd, Tabitha Tanner, Callie Hefner, Rachel Thomas, Nichole Mobley, Nathan Davis, Michael Perez, Aaron Margrabe, Tyler Jamerson, Bethany Miget, Haley Rightnowar, Amy Cunningham, Josh Carbaugh, Rachel Cunningham, Michael Evans, Andrew Toeneskoetter, Kristin Margrabe and Danielle Owen.

  • Shawnee Community College will hold an online chat session from 6 to 8 p.m. April 29 for potential students to talk to staff. Majors, housing and financial aid will be discussed. Visit www.shawneecc.edu for more information.
  • Students interested in attending a U.S. service academy in 2009 can request an application packet from U.S. Sen. Kit Bond by calling coordinator Christopher Stone at 417-864-8258. The deadline for requesting a packet in Nov. 14 and the application is due by Dec. 5. To attend an Air Force, Military, Marine, or Naval academy, students must receive a nomination from a senator or member of Congress.
