* Jade Ray Samanta, a student at Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau, recently won his second consecutive Regional Spelling Bee in Poplar Bluff, Mo., a news release said. Winning the fifth annual regional competition, held at Three Rivers College, earned him an all-expenses paid trip for him and two parents to Washington, D.C., where he will represent Southeast Missouri in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. Samanta won first place by correctly spelling the word "ribosome." Last year, Samanta made it through the first three preliminary rounds of the national bee, but didn't qualify for the semifinals. According to the bee's website, this year's event runs from May 25 to 31.
* Four local students were chosen as Missouri Scholars 100, a program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. They are Joshua Greaser and Vikas Rudrappa of Cape Girardeau Central High School, Samuel Lowes of Jackson High School and Reagan Kapp of Notre Dame Regional High School. According to the association's website, schools statewide were invited to nominate candidates for this recognition. Selection is based primarily on a formula using the student's grade-point average and ACT or SAT score, the site said. Each nominee had to first meet criteria of an Academic Decathlon, under which students must have a minimum GPA of 3.750; a minimum ACT score of 29 or a minimum SAT score of 1,900; be ranked in the upper 10 percent of the class; and have taken upper level courses in mathematics, science, English, and foreign language, the site said. The student must also have excellent attendance, be an exemplary school citizen, and be involved in the school activity program, the site said.
