Track and field club supported by mentors

A group of adults encouraged the youth of South Cape to get involved in a state competition in Jefferson City, "The Hershey's Track and Field Games," after finishing first place in the local Hershey's Track and Field games in May at Central Junior High School.

Three coaches, the Rev. Howard McGee of New Horizons Missionary Church, Terrance Lane of the U.S. Postal Service and Salvation Army youth director Mike Bowers, encouraged the group to practice and prepared team members for competition at a level that most in the group had not competed at before.

The success of the track team resulted in first- to eighth-place ribbons for all 16 participants at the Jefferson City event.

Together, coaches who organized transportation and lodging arrangements funded by the River Corridor Task Force, the United Way, which provided T-shirts, and parents helped team members develop their talents and learn about discipline, team work, dedication and sportsmanship.
