1. Re-enact your first date: Most likely, the beginning of a relationship is when you're going the extra mile to be romantic. You both likely were putting in a little more effort to get to know and impress each other, so use those experiences to your advantage. Reliving that first date is also a way to celebrate Valentine's Day in a way that feels more personal rather than commercial.
2. Dress up: Many of us spend our days wearing jeans or business casual, which can become a little boring after a while. It's nice to break up the monotony and pull out all the stops: Fix your hair (guys, shape up that facial hair), spray on the nice cologne or perfume and dig into the deep recesses of your closet for that outfit you've been saving for a special occasion.
3. Stick to the classics: Scatter some rose petals, light the candles -- or use those nifty battery-powered candles if you're concerned about the fire hazard -- and feel free to toss in some candy or flowers (just be sure you order them early because flower shops will be emptied by the 14th). There's nothing wrong with the classics.
4. Stay in: Personally, waiting half an hour for a table at a restaurant or sitting back-to-back in a room full of people isn't my idea of romantic. Try skipping the restaurant and cooking dinner together. It gives you time to talk and catch up, and it's nice to enjoy a peaceful home-cooked meal every once in a while.
5. Remember the little things: Don't make the day just about gifts and dinner. If you really want your loved one to feel special, make a point to say "I love you" a little more often, call or text them to ask how their day is going and don't be afraid to be that cutesy couple that holds hands in public. They're small gestures, but they'll be remembered long after dinner's over and the candy's gone.
