Summer is the time to relax, hang out with friends and family, and have fun adventures to tell about when school starts up again in August. You don't have to leave Southeast Missouri to find adventure this summer. Eat a fresh homemade doughnut

Satisfy your sweet tooth as you bite into one of the most delicious, melt-in-your-mouth confections ever tasted: a Hoeckele's doughnut. Hoeckele's Bakery in Perryville, Mo., has been a family business since it opened in 1937, and now the fourth generation is working there. "The peanut coffee cake is our signature item -- it's a secret recipe," said owner Angie Hoeckele. "Everyone from out-of-state buys a ton and goes home with it." Hoeckele's Bakery is open from 3 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 3 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays. Or you can get your Hoeckele's doughnuts on the go at 17 different Rhodes Convenience Store locations from Chaffee, Mo., to Ste. Genevieve, Mo. Any doughnut is a good bet when you're trying to decide from the rows of pastries. "I don't have a favorite," Hoeckele said. "I like every single thing we have."
