Nominated by Notre Dame Regional High School
After much thought, it is our privilege to nominate Kenneth Haas for the Spirit of America Award. Throughout his 90 years, Kenny has undoubtedly exemplified a true American in several ways. For example, the little things in life have been important for Mr. Haas. Whether it be making his chocolate pecan candy for citizens in our community, giving neighbors advice concerning yardwork or reeling in that sought-after fish with family and friends, amazingly he continues to befriend people he meets. One of the greatest accomplishments for Mr. Haas was his military service. To defend our nation and its citizens, Ken enlisted in the Navy on July 22, 1942. He attended Quartermaster School and received his boot training at the Great Lakes. Mr. Haas volunteered for PT Boat school at Melville, R.I., and was later assigned on PT Boat 326 in Squadron 21. These operations took place along the coast of New Guinea in the South Pacific. His squadron received the Presidential Unit Citation Award. Kenny was discharged with honor on Dec. 16, 1945, and was awarded the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Award, and Asiatic Pacific Award with four stars.
After his military service, Mr. Haas married Juanita Stewart in 1953 and together they had three children. Over the years, he was employed at Vandeven's Mercantile Company, Marquette Cement Plant, and Sunny Hill Garden and Pet Center. Ken was inducted into the Notre Dame Hall of Fame, is a member of the Knights of Columbus, and is active in St. Vincent de Paul Church.
Please honor the wonderful example Kenneth Haas has shown to others by accepting this nomination for the Spirit of America Award. Ken's desire to help people demonstrates that he is very deserving.
