Christian Women's Club to hold luncheon at Elks Lodge

Christian Women's Club will have a luncheon, inspirational speaker and music from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Elks Lodge at 639 Elks Lane in Cape Girardeau. The event is open to the public.

VMY Youth will meet Sunday at Shrine Church in Perryville

The next Vincentian Marian Youth Encounter will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Shrine Church in Perryville, Mo. The evening will include a Mass featuring contemporary Christian music, a consecration ceremony for new members and vocational prayers. The Rev. David Nations will be the Mass celebrant. The evening concludes with food (homemade ice cream) and fun. Vincentian Marian Youth events are geared for teens and young adults, but all ages are welcome.

Lutheran Chorale takes break before fall rehearsals begin

The Perry County Lutheran Chorale under the direction of Tyson Wunderlich took its first tour the weekend of July 25 to 27, singing sacred classical and contemporary choral music at Campus Lutheran Church in Columbia, Mo.; St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lee's Summit, Mo., and Trinity Lutheran Church in Cole Camp, Mo. In addition, the choral sang at the two Sunday morning worship services at St. Matthew in Lees Summit. The people of Campus and St. Matthew Lutheran churches hosted the choir members overnight in their homes. This was a first for the choral, which began in 2006 and has already performed in many settings in and around Perry County. After a brief break for the remainder of the summer, it will resume rehearsals from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, Mo., in preparation for fall and winter engagements. Anyone who is a member of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregation in or near Perry County is invited to participate. For more information, contact the Rev. Reign Forest building to be dedicated Sunday at La Croix

The Reign Forest, La Croix United Methodist Church's new children's ministry building, will be dedicated this weekend. A ribbon cutting and consecration will be at 4:30 p.m. today and an open house for the community will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Visiting priest will speak at Orthodox Christian Mission

The Rev. Daniel Byantoro, a missionary from Indonesia who converted to Orthodox Christianity from Islam, will speak at the newly forming Orthodox Christian Mission of Cape Girardeau. Vespers will be said at 5 p.m. today. Orthos (Martins) will be at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. Refreshments will follow.

Weekly events scheduled at First Baptist Church

Sunday Bible study at First Baptist Church is at 9:30 a.m. and worship service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, featuring the sermon series for August, "Olympic Faith." The Rev. Mike Shupert's message this week is titled "Heroes." The Wednesday night family meal will be at 5:30 p.m. Bible study (Luke chapter 18) with Dr. Ron Winstead is at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. A new discussion group sponsored by the church, Socrates' Cafe at Grace Cafe, 818 Broadway, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday for young adults interested in stretching their faith. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, The Core YOUth Group for junior-high students will meet.

Gospel music groups perform around Southeast Missouri

  • The Rivermen Quartet from Malden, Mo., and the Hutsons from Bloomfield, Mo., will present an evening of gospel music at 7 p.m. today at the Lake Wappapello Theater. Admission is free, but donations to the groups will be appreciated.
  • The Tribute Quartet of Nashville, Tenn., will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First General Baptist Church of Jackson.
  • Matthew Palisch, former organ student of Dr. Gary Miller, will present an organ recital at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson. The recital celebrates Palisch's installation as director of music and worship at St. Paul.

Red Star Baptist Church to hold open mic service

A Christian open mic service will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at Red Star Baptist Church. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m. with worship at 10:40 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday; 2 p.m. Bible study Monday and Wednesday prayer meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Children's crusade planned Wednesday at Calvary United

A summer children's crusade will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Jackson. Children's evangelist Trent Sheerin from St. Louis will lead the children in songs, games and biblical illustrations. A finale party will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 16. Children ages 4 to 12 are invited to attend. The church is at 581 Broadridge Drive, between Jackson Middle School and West Lane Elementary School.
