In response to the devastating and widespread ice storm that struck Southeast Missouri in January, the American Red Cross received a $15,000 grant from Unilever's Sikeston, Mo., ice cream manufacturing plant to help replenish the Disaster Relief Fund. This fund ensures services are available to victims of disaster as well as to prepare for emergencies before disaster strikes. The Red Cross provided shelter for more than 5,000 people, served more than 80,000 meals and snacks, distributed personal comfort kits and provided financial assistance to 12 families who lost their home to fires related to the ice storm.
