Photo by Aaron Horrell<br>The white-throated sparrow is a friendly song bird very similar in size and appearance to the common house sparrow. Its breeding area includes a large part of Canada and an area in the United States encompasing the Great Lakes. The white-throated sparrow winters throughout much of the southeastern quarter of the U.S. During our coldest months here in southeast Missouri this bird is a common sight in wooded brushy places and old fields. It is an eater of seeds and although it will sometimes come to bird feeders, it will more aptly come to a small pile of corn thrown upon the ground near undergrowth. These birds travel in small flocks and I usually observe them staying close to the ground in thick weeds or brush.

"I'm trying to be the eyes of people who don't have the opportunity to take advantage of going out and seeing this," he said.

Horrell's photos, tips and places to find animals will appear in a weekly feature called "Through the woods" in future Good Times sections.
