__New Year's Eve:__ There are plenty of options to ring in the New Year in Southeast Missouri, and some events let you celebrate while raising money for a good cause:
> The United Way's annual New Year's Eve party in Cape Girardeau includes heavy hors d'oeuvre, a cash bar, live music, party favors, a late-night snack and complimentary champagne at midnight.
> Ste. Genevieve celebrates New Year's Eve with a nod to its French roots. During La Guiannee revelers -- descendants of Ste. Genevieve's earliest settlers -- dress in bizarre and somewhat archaic costumes and wander from place to place singing a beggars song for favors.

__Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner:__ Each year Southeast Missouri State University brings a nationally known speaker to Cape Girardeau for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner. This year's guest speaker will be Soledad O'Brien, one of the most sought-after journalists. In June 2013, she launched Starfish Media Group, a multi-platform media production and distribution company dedicated to uncovering and producing empowering stories that look at the often divisive issues of race, class, wealth, poverty and opportunity. She will present the keynote address at the Jan. 21 dinner at the Show Me Center.

__Annual King's Ball:__ The ball, originally held to celebrate twelfth night but now celebrated on the first Saturday of February, is just another of Ste. Genevieve's Old French settlers' traditions that has been celebrated annually for more than 250 years. Attendees are encouraged to dress in French Colonial attire and participate in the traditional music and dance. Some guests dress their tables with a candelabrum, tablecloths, wineglasses and buffets of food, so dancers can "nibble their way around the hall and visit."
__Art shows__
On the first Friday of the month, galleries and shops in Cape Girardeau stay open late for the First Friday art openings, and Perryville does the same during its Art Walk the second Friday of each month. The art gallery at the Sikeston Depot Museum changes every two months, featuring a variety of styles from local and regional artists.
