Cape Central student named National Merit semifinalist

Cape Central High's Michael Hwang has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship, the school district announced this week.

Hwang is among the most academically talented high school seniors in the nation, and will have the opportunity to continue in the competition to earn scholarship money, the release stated.

National Merit Semifinalists are screened by taking a test and submitting a detailed application about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership skills, and honors received. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

Earlier this year, Hwang was recognized for earning a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. He has served as secretary of BETA Club, co-founder and co-captain of Chess Club, a Tiger Ambassador and student director of Advisory Tutoring and Tutoring Tuesday. Hwang is known at Central High by faculty and students as a gifted teacher who has helped a number of his peers improve their grades.
