Jackson High School student Christine Sturms has been chosen for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation.

Zimmer inducted into honor society

Michael Zimmer of Cape Girardeau was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society at St. Louis University.

  • Bailey Reutzel of Cape Girardeau and Megan Chapman of Oran, Mo., have been awarded Regents' scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007 to 2008 academic year. Reutzel, a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, is the daughter of Gene and Linda Reutzel. Chapman, a senior at Oran High School, is the daughter of Keith and Lori Chapman.
  • Amanda Gohn of Jackson and Natalie Wolfenkoehler of Millersville have been awarded President's scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007 to 2008 academic year.
  • Kristen Smith, Teresa Miller, Josh Steinnerd and Drew Hillis, all of Jackson; Casey Crawford of Gordonville and Nathan Stroder of Whitewater have been awarded Missouri Leadership scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. Hillis also received a Boys State Leadership Award. Smith and Steinnerd are seniors at Jackson High School. Miller and Crawford are seniors at Notre Dame Regional High School. Smith is the daughter of Sandy and Wayne Walley of Jackson and Joey Smith of Meridian, Miss. Steinnerd is the son of Bertha Steinnerd of Jackson and the late David Farrow. Miller is the daughter of Dean Miller of Jackson and Janey Foust of Cape Girardeau. Crawford is the daughter of Mike and Carol Crawford. Hillis, a senior at Saxony Lutheran High School, is the son of Scott and Eva Hillis. Stroder, a senior at Delta High School, is the son of Bonnie Stroder of Whitewater and Victor Moss of Las Vegas, Nev.

  • Rebecca Hicks, a second-grade teacher at Blanchard Elementary School, has been named a state finalist for the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation's highest honor for elementary and secondary educators.
  • Jeannie Hirsch Blaylock, daughter of Jim and Beverly Hirsch of Cape Girardeau, has been awarded the Citation for Achievement from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. The award recognizes distinguished alumni. Blaylock is an Emmy Award-winning news anchor and reporter for WTLV-12 and WJXX-25 broadcast stations in Jacksonville, Fla.
  • Kelso C-7 School District of New Hamburg, Mo., is one of 235 school districts in Missouri to receive Distinction in Performance awards from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Kelso is one of few districts to be honored with the award every year since its inception seven years ago, school officials said.
  • Early registration for fall classes at Three Rivers Community College will be today and extend through July 13. Also, early registration for summer classes will continue through April 27. Students may register on the main campus at Poplar Bluff, Mo., at the college's education centers in Kennett, Malden, Portageville and Sikeston. Returning students also can register for classes online. The Web site is www.trcc.edu.
  • Shawnee Community College in Ullin, lll, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at noon April 20 to kick off construction of its medical arts and sciences building, campus residence hall and career technology center.
