A busy week for many! Along with numerous birthdays, we sprung forward an hour this morning under a full moon as we returned to Daylight Saving Time. The full moon of March is often referred to as Sleepy Moon (how fitting), Windy Moon, Fish Moon and Moon When Eyes Are Sore from Bright Snow.
This month of March is Music in Our Schools Month, Irish American Month, National Women's History Month, Red Cross Month and Social Workers Month.
St. Patrick's Day is Thursday, plus we get to enjoy Lenten fish and chicken dinners at the Chaffee Elks Lodge on Fridays.
We recently honored our caregivers on Caregivers Appreciation Day, but every day is a good day to show our caregivers how very much we appreciate all that they do.
We also appreciate all the Senior Center does under the direction of Susie Pobst. They need your help with this year's community garden. Not only does it save money, but the garden provides nutritious vegetables for meals at the center. If you can lend a hand, please call Susie or Lisa at (573) 887-3600.
The Senior Center thanks Joe Mohorc for raising the new US Flag donated by the VFW Ladies. Volunteers and donations are always welcome!
Last week, our "then there was" mentioned the lady who gave up adult beverages for Lent but only at her house. She added she expects to spend most evenings at friends' homes.
In South Texas, a woman gave up beer for Lent. Several weeks prior, she had entered an online contest for a chance of home delivery of a case of Budweiser beer. As luck would have it she won, and the Clydesdales delivered the beer to her home last week. No word as to whether she drank any of the beer, but she did enjoy the carriage ride around the block. The Budweiser Clydesdales were in Hidalgo, Texas, for a BorderFest celebration.
Easter decorations and candies already abound in stores. We hope you will share with us some of your early Easter egg activities. Chaffee High School Easter break is April 13 to 18.
Before you know it, summer will be here. In preparation for the opening of the Harmon Field Pool, City Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for lifeguards, cashiers and swimming pool manager. Pick up applications at City Hall; for information, contact Morgan Swinford at CHS. You must be 15 or over; the deadline is March 24.
Another deadline that we urge all parents to remind their sons and daughters who are seniors at CHS and plan to attend college or a trade school is this: Pick up an application for the Briggs scholarship from Meleia Sides, counselor at CHS. It is a generous scholarship especially for those attending trade schools. Every qualified applicant receives some financial help. Mr. Briggs thought it was important for every graduating senior to learn a trade so they can make a living and provide for a family.
Another annual scholarship is the one set up in memory of my mother, Ruth Buckhannon, for those attending a public school in Scott County who plan to become a registered nurse. Although she wasn't a nurse, my mother took care of my dad in our home for 10 years after he suffered a debilitating stroke. While raising four daughters, she took care of him by herself with minimal help from her daughters due to our young ages, using her common sense, her love of her husband and her daughters and her unwavering faith in God. This is the 11th year for the scholarship; the 2016 recipient was Ashlyn McIntosh of Oran.
Applications for both scholarships are available from Meleia Sides at CHS with deadlines of April 12.
Remember to tell those special people in your life that you love them. Those three words mean so very much. Email your news to me at darbuck2@airmail.net or leave a message at (573) 887-6430.
Then there was the popular pub "I da Claire."
