Infection control seminar scheduled in Poplar Bluff on April 21

"Infection control, Through the Eyes of the State Surveyor" is the title of a workshop sponsored by the Missouri League for Nursing for health-care professionals. Locally, the seminar will be held at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo., on April 21. Patricia Lynn Meyer, an inspection control consultant to long-term care and assisted living facilities, hospitals, home health and prison health units, will be the presenter.

Community outreach clinics scheduled for Scott County

The Scott County Health Department has scheduled its community outreach clinics for April. Clinic hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at each location. Many of the services that are offered at the health department office are available at most outreach clinics, including -- but not limited to -- immunizations, blood pressure screenings, family planning and TB testing.

Clinics scheduled are:

April 12: First Assembly of God church, Scott City.

April 19: Elks Lodge, Chaffee, Mo.

April 26: Riverside Regional Library, Benton, Mo.

Fitness manager to discuss proper techniques for gardening

Gardening is a great fitness and stress relieving activity, but it can also result in strains and aching backs, shoulders and legs. Hot summer months can also put gardeners at risk for heat-related injuries. Scott Givens, fitness manager at Main Street Fitness Center, will demonstrate proper lifting techniques, provide guidelines for safe and effective exercise to strengthen gardening muscles, and discuss safety while working out in the heat at a free program, from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Street Fitness Center in Jackson.

First aid and CPR training at Jackson fitness center

American Red Cross First Aid training will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday at the Main Street Fitness Center in Jackson. The class is designed for anyone who wants to be able to handle emergency situations including heat and cold emergencies, bites, cuts and broken bones. Upon completion, participants are certified for three years.

Also offered that day, from 8 a.m. to noon, will be a Heartsaver CPR course, covering adult, infant and child CPR and procedures for handling choking and the automatic external defibrillator. Participants will receive American Heart Association two-year certification after requirements have been fulfilled.

Adult swim class offered at HealthPoint Fitness Center starting Monday

HealthPoint Fitness Center will offer an adult learn-to-swim class beginning Monday. Classes will be held at 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The course gives information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies It will cover water entry/exit, comfort in the water, buoyancy, kicking, breathing, arm movements and water safety including how to protect yourself while assisting someone else.
