Central choir alumni plan reunion, concert
All singers who have participated in any choral group at Central High School in Cape Girardeau are invited to participate in a choir alumni reunion concert Oct. 2 and 3 at the high school. The event will begin at 7 p.m. with the alumni singing the national anthem at the CHS homecoming football game. Singers will rehearse all day Oct. 3 -- with a break for a catered lunch -- and present a free public concert at 7:30 p.m. in Kinder Performance Hall, followed by a party. Retired CHS choral director Judy Williams Johnson will lead eight selections, and Decima Israel Panitch and Melinda Young Mullins have volunteered to accompany on piano. Church selling meat to raise money for tech upgrades
Eisleben Lutheran Church in Scott City is having a smoked meat fundraiser to raise money for church technology improvements. Boston butts are priced at $27, and pork loins are $30. Wednesday is the ordering deadline; orders may be placed by calling (573) 576-0583. Meat will be available for pickup after 4 p.m. Sept. 3.
Apple Creek church sets parish picnic
St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church will hold its annual parish picnic from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the church in Apple Creek. The menu will include kettle beef and fried chicken; activities will include bingo, games, country store, raffle and live music by Back Street Cruisers from 7 to 11 p.m. The cost of the meal is $9 for adults and $4 for children ages 7 and older; carryouts will be available.
Workshop to explore historical fabrics
The Cape Girardeau County Historical Society History Center, 102 S. High St. in Jackson, will host a fabric-identification workshop, "Fabric and Color Throughout History," from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 5. The class will be taught by Ann Hazelwood, former president of the National Quilt Museum, professional quilt appraiser and fabric expert. Space is limited; registration is $30. Silver Lake church to hold picnic
St. Rose of Lima Parish in Silver Lake, Missouri, will hold its annual picnic from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the church. St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church will hold its annual fall dinner from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13. The menu will include kettle beef, chicken and dumplings, chicken and dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw, dessert and beverages.
Red Star Baptist sets benefit dinner
Red Star Baptist Church will hold a benefit dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at 1301 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. The meal will include home-fried chicken, fried catfish, baked beans, potato salad, baked apples, homemade rolls, homemade desserts and beverages. Dance fundraiser scheduled Oct. 3
Dancers and dance fans are being sought for a competition to take place from 2 to 5:45 p.m. Oct. 3 to raise money for research, programs and services related to multiple sclerosis. The event will take place at the North Rec Center of Southeast Missouri State University, 750 New Madrid St., Cape Girardeau. Registration will begin at 1:30 with competition at 2 p.m. Tickets and participant sign-up sheets are available at Southeast Missouri State University Towers, SEMO Bookstore, SEMO North Rec Center Front Desk, SEMO's Show Me Center ticket booth and the front desk at the River Campus. General admission is $2 per person; team admission is $5 per person and includes snacks and drinks. Military History Museum adds hours
The Perry County Military History Museum will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays -- in addition to its regular hours of 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays -- beginning in September, said Carlene Rauh, museum curator. The museum is in the Higher Education Building on the campus of St. Mary Seminary at 108 S. Progress Drive, Floor 2, in Perryville, Missouri. The museum also welcomes volunteers. Wellness, health fair scheduled Oct. 21
The second annual Southeast Missourian Wellness and Health Fair -- an educational health-care experience for adults and seniors -- will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk with potential patients and customers. The inaugural event, in 2014, attracted nearly 200 attendees.
