Letter carriers' food drive set May 9
The annual letter carriers' food drive will be May 9, when letter carriers will pick up donations of nonperishable food left near residents' mailboxes. Items will be donated to food pantries in Cape Girardeau, Scott City, Jackson and Benton, Missouri. More information is available by calling 573-986-8298.
Stone Soup Shakespeare will present Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" from 6 to 8 p.m. May 9 on the lawn of the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Attendees are asked to bring canned goods to be donated to FISH of Cape Girardeau and to bring their own seating and refreshments. More information is available by calling 573-334-5279.
That 80s Band will perform May 23 at the Jackson Band Shell in a concert sponsored by the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce. Tickets, which are no for sale from chamber members, are $10; those 10 years old and younger will be admitted free of charge. Gates will open at 6 p.m. with the performance running from 7 to 11 p.m. Food and a cash bar will be available; participants are urged to bring their own seating. Applications are being accepted for the third annual Missouri Woman in Agriculture Contest, hosted by the Missouri State Fair to honor the contributions women make to the state's leading industry. The title will be awarded in two age divisions, with each winner receiving a $1,000 donation from Monsanto for a not-for-profit, agriculture-related cause of her choice.
Contest applications and rules are available online at mostatefair.com/ag-contest, with entries being accepted through June 5. Interested applicants can also receive a copy of the documents in the mail, by calling the Fair at 800-422-3247. Women ages 31 and older will be eligible for the Missouri Woman in Agriculture Award, and women 18 to 30 will be eligible for the Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star Award.
