The First Baptist Church of Delta, Mo., will celebrate Homecoming 2013 at 10:45 a.m. Sept. 15. Guest speaker will be John Vernon of the Cape Girardeau Baptist Association. The church will be celebrating 113 years of ministry to the community. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish for a fellowship meal following the morning worship service. Cape Girardeau Urology Associates and the Southeast Cancer Center are sponsoring a free prostate cancer screening from 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 21 at Southeast Cancer Center, 789 S. Mount Auburn Road. Appointments are not necessary. The screening, in conjunction with national Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, takes only a few minutes and consists of a simple blood test and a digital rectal exam. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, regardless race or ethnicity. Men older than 35 and those at high risk including African-Americans and men with a family history of prostate cancer are encouraged to take advantage of the screening. The Department of Natural Resources is asking Missouri fifth-graders to submit ideas for next year's Earth Day slogan. The theme of Earth Day 2014 is watersheds, and the successful slogan contest entry will reflect that theme. The winning student will be honored at Missouri's 20th annual Earth Day celebration at the state capitol building. The winner also will receive a $50 gift card donated by Central Bank in Jefferson City. Mo. Entries will be accepted now through Oct. 16; the winner will be announced in December. The contest is limited to Missouri fifth-grade students. In the event of duplicate slogan submissions, the winner will be determined by the date the entry was received.
