Run for God will hold an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lynwood Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. Run for God will meet every Monday beginning Sept. 17 for 12 weeks. The purpose is to prepare participants to walk, jog or run a 5K in 12 weeks while learning the parallels between endurance sports and faith. There is no cost. The Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation will hold its annual Fall Book Sale Friday, Saturday and Sept. 9. There will be a special preview for Friends members from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday. Hundreds of items will be available for purchase.
Living History Day at Big Oak State Park will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event will have demonstrations of old-time skills such as rope making, weaving, flintknapping and making canvas floor cloths. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music played by Bluegrass Revival. The Walk to End Alzheimer's will be held at 8 a.m. Sept. 15 at Cape County North Park in Cape Girardeau. The Alzheimer's Association estimates 5.4 million people are affected by Alzheimer's. For more information or to start or join a team, visit alz.org.
A benefit dinner for David Dole will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Perkins Fire Hall on Route P. Fried chicken and all the trimmings will be served. There will also be a raffle and silent auction. Proceeds will go to help Dole with medical expenses.
New Salem United Methodist Church of Daisy, Mo., will be hosting a benefit dinner and bake sale for Burt Hahs from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9. Proceeds will go to help with Hahs' expenses as he recovers. Ham and beans, coleslaw, cornbread, drinks, and dessert will be served.
Maple United Methodist Church of Cape Girardeau will send teams to serve the community for the Serve2012 service event on Sept. 8. Participants will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the church for breakfast and a devotion, with service projects beginning at 9 a.m. Projects include painting and landscape work at the fire department, installing playground equipment at a park and a prayer team for local schools. Those interested in participating may call the
