Current River to host kayak clinics in July

Current River State Park will be hosting a series of kayak clinics during the month of July. The clinics will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Fridays and will be taught on the park's lower lake. Kayaks will be provided and visitors will learn more about kayak safety and skills. Topics covered include kayak equipment, basic paddle strokes and maneuvers, river safety and basic rescue techniques. Clinic instructors are certified by the American Canoe Association. Sessions will be limited to 12 participants and advance reservations are required. Reservations can be made in person or by calling Current River State Park at 858-3015.

Booth lottery on July 18 for Osage Centre event

A booth lottery drawing is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 18 at the Osage Centre for people who want to have a booth at the Summer Garage Sale. The drawing will be at random and the cost is $15 per booth. Parish picnic scheduled for Friday and Saturday

The St. Lawrence Parish annual picnic in New Hamburg, Mo., is scheduled from 5 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and from 3 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday. A smorgasbord dinner will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday at the St. Lawrence Parish Center, and tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12, and children 5 and under eat free. A washer tournament is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday and the horseshoe tournament is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Turtle Races will be 6 p.m. Saturday and a Kid's Tractor Pull follows at 7 p.m. The Little Mr. and Miss New Hamburg Contest will be Friday at 7 p.m. for ages 3 to 5. Contestants must be a family member of St. Lawrence Parish. A talent show is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday for junior and senior divisions ages 6 to 22. The deadline for entry is Thursday. Free TDaP vaccinations during July and August

The Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center is offering free TDaP -- tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis -- vaccinations to adults and children 11 years of age and older during special community vaccination clinics in July and August. The clinics will be held at the A.C. Brase Arena Building in Arena Park from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday; the Jackson American Legion Hall from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 15; the Delta Community Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 17; the Osage Centre from 1 to 6 p.m. July 26; Cape Fire Station No. 2 drive-through from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 2; and Jackson Fire Station No. 1 drive-through from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 9. TDaP vaccinations will be offered at no charge during these clinics regardless of insurance status. For more information, call the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center at 335-7846.

Capaha Classic 5K Run this Saturday

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will hold the 26th Annual Capaha Classic 5K and Children's Mile Run this Saturday at Capaha Park. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m. and continues until 7:40 a.m. with a registration fee of $20. The cost of the event will be $15 for those who register in advance by Wednesday. Each participant will receive a T-shirt at the race. The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. with the children's mile run following at 8:45 a.m. Awards will be given out to the top three overall finishers as well as the top three finishers in each age group for the 5K. The top three finishers of each age group in the children's mile run also will be awarded. For more information, call the parks and recreation department at 339-6340.

Jehovah's Witnesses to attend convention

Jehovah's Witnesses from the Southeast Missouri region will attend the 2013 God's Word Is Truth! District Convention at the St. Charles Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Witnesses will attend one of the two three-day conventions that will be held on the consecutive weekends, the second beginning Friday. All of the 112 regional congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses will be supporting a campaign of distributing printed invitations to the conventions.

Benton Neighbor Day Pageant entries being accepted

Entries for the Benton Neighbor Day Pageants are now being accepted. Categories include Tiny Mr. and Miss for ages 1 to 2; Little Mr. and Miss for ages 3 to 5; Junior Miss for 6th to 8th grade; and Queen for 9th through 12th grade. The pageants will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30. There is a $15 entry fee and each contest is limited to 15 entries. Diabetes Self-Management Support Group

A support-group program for those with diabetes will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at HealthPoint in Cape Girardeau. The program will review the main types of diabetic neuropathy and methods of monitoring for this condition. Treatment options that are available will also be discussed. Ostomy Club Support Group

The Ostomy Club will meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Harrison Room at Southeast Hospital. The support group helps reduce the practical and emotional burdens of those who may have undergone ostomy surgery. Hollister representative Jeff Eriksson will present this month's program. Lifesaver class for new parents

The Lifesaver Class for New Parents will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in meeting Room 106 of Southeast Hospital. This class helps participants recognize, prevent and respond to life-threatening situations. The class also covers infant CPR and response to a choking infant. The class is free to those delivering at Southeast and there is a $10 fee for others. Seating is limited. Register online at SEhealth.org or by calling 331-6190.
