Saint Francis holds disease management workshop

Saint Francis Medical Center will host a free Living a Healthy Life workshop beginning Aug. 27. The six-week workshop, a proven self-management education program for those with chronic health problems, will address arthritis, diabetes and lung and heart disease and will teach skills for managing a variety of other chronic diseases. Topics include techniques to deal with problems associated with chronic disease; exercise; use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals; nutrition; and how to evaluate new treatments. The workshop will meet in Health and Wellness Center Conference, Room 3, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road, Entrance 8, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays from Aug. 27 to Oct. 1. St. Joseph Parish to hold picnic

The St. Joseph Parish Picnic is scheduled Aug. 31 at St. Joseph Parish in Apple Creek, Mo. Activities will include games, raffles for prizes, a country store, fancy stand and bingo in an air-conditioned hall for quilts and cash. A kettle-cooked beef and fried-chicken dinner will be served from 2 to 7 p.m., rain or shine. An all-you-can-eat buffet including hamburgers, fish, grilled cheese and ice cream also will be offered. Cost for the buffet will be $9 for adults and $4 for children ages 6 to 12; children under age 6 eat free. Carry-outs will be available. The Rev. Jim French will preside at Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday, and music by Doug and Mitch will be performed under the pavilion until 11 p.m. For more information, call Shirley Buchheit at 788-2588.
