Ministerial Alliance to hold benefit concert

The second annual Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry benefit concert will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 1 at New McKendree United Methodist Church's south campus in Jackson. Churches with groups performing this year include Immaculate Conception, Cape County Cowboy Church, First Baptist and New McKendree. An offering will be taken, and canned food donations will be accepted.

Canine Good Citizen dog training offered

Dog obedience classes will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cape County Park South. The classes are designed to teach dogs the basic obedience commands, as well as the socialization needed to enhance the human/canine bond. Prices will vary. Participants will meet in the lower parking lot below shelter No. 22.

Book club to meet at Cape Girardeau library

The Cape Girardeau Public Library monthly meeting of the Monday Night Book Club will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Penzel Conference Room of the library. The book for discussion is "Her Fearful Symmetry" by Audrey Niffenegger. The meeting is open to adult readers of the ages of 18 and up. Participants acquire books on their own.

Genealogical society cancels next meeting

Because of the Homecomers celebration, the Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society has canceled its meeting, originally set for Tuesday. The next meeting will be Sept. 28 at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center in Jackson.

Historical society offers docent training

Docent training and tours of the Oliver House Museum in Jackson will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 by the Jackson Heritage Association. All community members who are interested in learning more about Sen. Robert Oliver, his wife, Marie, and the history of the home are encouraged to take a tour. Kiwanis Club sponsors annual baby contest

The Kiwanis Club of Jackson will sponsor its annual baby contest each night of Jackson Homecomers. The club will have a booth where fairgoers can donate money to the cutest baby photo. The contest will be broken into two categories: newborn to 2 years old and ages 3 to 5. The baby whose photo raises the most money in each age group will receive a sitting and 11-by-14 portrait from Simply Stated, A Photography Studio. The second-place winner in each group will receive a $50 savings bond. All money raised will be used for projects to help local children.
