Teresa Lape of Cape Girardeau will bike the full length of the Katy Trail -- 253 miles -- from June 17 to 21 as part of the worldwide The Longest Day events in support of families battling the Alzheimer's epidemic. Lape will ride from Clinton, Mo., to Machens, Mo., in honor of a friend she used to bike with. The Longest Day events, so named because they will fall on the longest day of the year, will be observed around the world with teams participating in sunrise-to-sunset relay events to raise funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association. The 2013 Great Race, a time and speed endurance rally for vintage cars, will make a stop in Cape Girardeau from 5 to 7 p.m. June 25. This is the first time in the 30-year history of the race that Cape Girardeau has been chosen as a host city. More than 100 vintage cars will participate in the race from St. Paul, Minn., to Mobile, Ala. The cars will travel the Cape Girardeau route from North Kingshighway and down Broadway to Main Street.
The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will host a second session of Pee-Wee Playground at Arena Park from 9 to 9:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from June 24 to July 10. The program is an opportunity for children ages 3 to 5 to get outside and be active a couple days per week this summer while they explore the world of nature and learn new games and crafts. Alto Vineyards, Shawnee Shuttle, the Neighborhood Co-op and Thomas Publishing have teamed for the "Dawg Days of Summer Super Shelter Spectacular!" on June 30 at Alto Vineyards. This inaugural fundraising event will benefit eight local animal rescue organizations and will be an exciting family and pet-friendly event featuring live music from The Rural Kings, The Bone Dry River Band and The Whistle Pigs. Food will be provided by Pat's BBQ and Juicing Bar, and talented art vendors will be displaying their work. Entertaining fundraising initiatives will include a dog wash, live auction and raffles. Local veterinarians, pet groomers and dog trainers will be on hand to provide information and basic services. The Scott City First Assembly of God will be hosting an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday. The fish fry servings will consist of fried fish, potatoes, baked beans, cole slaw, hushpuppies, coffee and tea. The cost will be $8.50 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 6 to 11. The Cape Central Booster Club will hold its annual golf benefit tournament to raise funds for its organization on July 19, at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. The golf tournament is the group's largest fundraiser of the year, and funds raised will help carry out the organization's mission of providing financial support to Central High School's students, teams and organizations. Hole-in-one prizes include a new Honda from Cape Girardeau Honda and a $10,000 cash giveaway as well as many other prizes.
