Saint Francis Medical Center will offer a six-week breast cancer support group beginning this week. Held on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Health and Wellness Center Conference Room 1 (Entrance 8), this support group helps recently diagnosed breast cancer patients meet the common challenges and questions that arise after a cancer diagnosis. Pam Lewis, a nurse practitioner and breast cancer nurse navigator at Saint Francis Womancare, will lead the group. At its conclusion, participants who attend a minimum of five meetings will receive a complimentary three-month membership to Fitness Plus. The American Red Cross is offering a training course that will give 11- to 15-year-olds the skills and confidence to safely and responsibly care for children and infants, as well as some tools to help them get started in their own baby-sitting business. Caregiving skills include feeding, diapering, playtime and bedtime routines. Participants also learn how to handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents. The training will be held at the Cape Girardeau Red Cross office, 2430 Myra Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The fee is $85. Take-home tools include a compact emergency reference guide, a CD-ROM with games, songs, and recipes, and a baby-sitting client organizer. HealthPoint Fitness in Jackson will host a 5K race at 7:30 a.m. July 4. The Independence Day 5K Run or Walk supports SoutheastHEALTH's cancer programs and children's health and wellness programs. The Mingo National Wildlife Refuge is having its seventh annual Mingo Swamp photo contest. The deadline for submission is July 2. Submit your unmounted, unmatted and unframed photos to Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, Attn: Mingo Swamp Photo Contest, 24279 State Hwy, 51, Puxico, MO 63960. There are five categories: Mingo landscape, native wildlife, native plant, people in nature and artistically enhanced. There are three divisions: adults (18 and older), youth (17 and younger) and professional photographers. That separate division allows for professional photographers to compete as a single category. The entry fee is $5 for the first three photos and $5 for each additional photo. Entry forms can be downloaded from mingoswampfriends.org. Photos must be 10 inches by 14 inches to help keep exhibit shipping costs affordable.
