Cancer Center hosts Journeys' support group

The Southeast Journeys cancer support group will meet Tuesday in the Unity Room at the Southeast Cancer Center, 789 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. The support group covers educational topics from the American Cancer Society's "I Can Cope" series. The meeting includes a question-and-answer session and also offers care, support and encouragement for those battling cancer and for their families and caregivers. Genealogical Society meeting Tuesday

The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, 112 E. Washington St. in Jackson. The program will be presented by Dr. William Shell of Sikeston, Mo. Shell will be speaking on Confederate Col. William L. Jeffers' 8th Missouri Cavalry Regiment. Golf tournament to aid wounded soldiers

Premier Rehab Physical Therapy will host its fourth annual Wounded Soldiers Golf Tournament on Friday at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. All proceeds will be donated to the U.S. Wounded Soldiers Foundation. The U.S. Wounded Soldiers Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that provides care and support to wounded soldiers who are combat veterans deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. In its first three years, the tournament has raised $24,200 for the foundation. The 18-hole tournament will have a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost to enter the tournament is $125 per player ($500 per team), which includes skins and one mulligan, a Nike golf shirt, green fees and cart rental, and lunch with on-course beverages. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants may also try their luck at several other individual contests, including the longest-drive challenge, the longest-putt challenge, closest-to-the-pin challenge and a $10,000 Hole-in-One Contest. Activities set for Thebes Courthouse

The Thebes Courthouse will have activities Saturday to May 28 including barbecue, drinks, a bake sale, music and tours. The Skin For Skin Pewter Co., re-enactors, traders and casters of pewter will be on the grounds Saturday. They will demonstrate pouring/casting pewter and trading. Cemetery to hold memorial service

The Pleasant Grove Cemetery Association will hold its annual memorial service noon May 27 with a covered dish luncheon. There will be a Memorial Day recognition service at 1 p.m. with Brig. Gen. Rodney Barham of Phenix City, Ala., as a guest speaker. A musical program will be presented by Ringer Hill Bluegrass of the Bell City area. A business meeting will follow at 2 p.m. Friends, family and guests are invited to attend. This year will mark the 124th year anniversary of the church and cemetery, which was organized in 1888. Local ad group offers scholarships

Tri-State Advertising & Marketing Professionals is now accepting applications for the 2012 scholarship program, which will award three $500 scholarships for the fall 2012 academic year. Students from the following schools are eligible to apply for the scholarships: Southeast Missouri State University, Mineral Area College, Three Rivers College, Murray State University and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in marketing, advertising, public relations, mass communications, graphic design, radio/television production or a related field in an accredited program and have at least a 3.0 grade-point average. Special consideration will be given to students displaying leadership in the college or university's official club in one of the previous areas. The completed application, along with supplementary materials, must be received by Aug. 3 to be considered. The Tri-State Board of Directors will select the scholarship recipients from the pool of applicants. Applications are available at www.tristateamp.com.
