Gym sale to be held in Jackson

Jackson Junior High School is hosting a gym sale with clothes, CDs, books, shoes for sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 16 in the school gym. Proceeds benefit THRIVE, an asset-building group in place at the middle school, junior high and high school.

Mother's Day basket raffle will benefit library

Raffle ticket purchases for a Mother's Day basket provided by the Jackson Friends of the Library will benefit the Jackson Riverside Regional Library. Contents of the basket include movie tickets, lotions, a restaurant gift card and certificates for hair care, car care and jewelry maintenance services. Funds raised will help provide equipment and necessities for the library's new location at 1997 E. Jackson Blvd. The winner will be notified Wednesday. The suggested donation is $1 per ticket or $5 for six tickets. Call 243-8141 for more information.

Riverlore Mansion to host luncheons

Riverlore Mansion, 2723 Washington Ave. in Cairo, Ill., will host two spring luncheons at noon May 13 and 14. Seating is limited. Make reservations early by calling Cairo Public Library at 618-734-1840. Proceeds will be used for restoration and upkeep of the home.

Church sponsors community fishing clinic for children

Wesley United Methodist Church of Fruitland will sponsor a community fishing clinic for children from 9:30 a.m. to noon May 16. Wildlife biologist Joe Tousignant of the Missouri Department of Conservation will be the instructor. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Bait, fishing tackle and snacks will be provided by the church. Limited to 20 children. Register your child by calling 573-837-6587. This is a free community event, however a recommended $3 donation will go to the Jackson Food Pantry.

Jackson High School class of 1999 to hold reunion

A 10-year class reunion will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25 at Jackson City Park. The reunion continues at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson. The park event is free. Attendees should bring their own food and refreshments. The evening will include hors d'oeuvres and snacks, cash bar, sound system and dance. Deadline for Missouri award to honor public safety officers is at month's end

The Department of Public Safety is now accepting nominations for Missouri's annual award honoring extraordinary valor above and beyond the call of duty by a Missouri public safety officer in 2008. Deadline for nominations is May 30. Applications are available at the Department of Public Safety website: www.dps.mo.gov. Applications must be printed and mailed to: State of Missouri, MO DPS, Medal of Valor Review Board, 301 West High Street, Room 870, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102.

United Way presents leadership lecture

The United Way of Southeast Missouri presents "Strengthening nonprofit leadership," with keynote speaker Jan Masaoka, from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 19 at the River Campus, Southeast Missouri State University. Angel Food Ministries offers new menu

The Church of Jesus Christ in Jackson, a host site for Angel Food Ministries is taking orders for the new May menu. Angel Food Ministries is a reduced cost food program. Payment must be made by 6 p.m. Monday, May 18; pick up is from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 29 at the church fellowship building on County Road 316 between Jackson and Gordonville off Highway 25. There is a dropbox for prepaid orders on church property or it may be mailed in. Arrangements for EBT orders can be made. For more information call 204-7087.

Arnsberg Cemetery Association plans meeting

The Arnsberg Cemetery Association meeting will begin with a 2 p.m. business meeting Sunday, May 17 on cemetery grounds located two miles west of I-55 on Route KK. Bring lawn chairs.
