SoutheastHEALTH will provide free Peripheral Artery Disease screenings from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Family Medicine of Poplar Bluff, 2002 Kanell Blvd. in Poplar Bluff, Missouri; 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 15, at HealthPoint Fitness, 2126 Independence in Cape Girardeau; 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at HealthPoint Fitness, 410 W. Main St. in Jackson; and from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 29, at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape Girardeau. A celebration for Bishop Emeritus John Leibrecht will be held in honor of his 60th anniversary of his priesthood at a Mass at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at St. Mary Cathedral, 615 William St. in Cape Girardeau. There will be a reception following the Mass in the St. Mary Cathedral School gym.
The 31st annual Kow Pasture Klassic "golf" tournament, sponsored by Schindler's Tavern, Kohlfeld Distributing, Stag/Pabst Brewing Co. and Mike's Hard Lemonade, will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Schindler's Tavern, 1029 State Highway A in Benton, Missouri. The tournament will consist of nine holes of hodgepodge golf, with tennis balls as golf balls. Any form of golf club is allowed, whether it be a hockey stick, shovel, boat oar and so on. There is an entry fee of $100 for each team of four, and the entry fee and registration will be needed to tee off. All prepaid registrants will receive a Kow Pasture Coolie Cup and ticket for free drinks and burgers, but participants must bring their own tennis balls and clubs. There will be a tribute to the military at 2 p.m. at the Avenue of Flags at Cape County Park North. All proceeds will benefit the Missouri Veterans Home and the Kenny Rogers Children's Center. A car show fundraiser will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at New McKendree United Methodist Church South Campus, on Highway 25 in Jackson. There will be no judging or classes; the attendees donate to their car of choice. First, second and third-place trophies will be awarded to the three cars that raise the most money. All proceeds will benefit Wesley, who is living with cerebral palsy and suffers from seizures. To increase his quality of life, his family is raising $15,000 for a therapy dog through 4 Paws for Ability, which will be able to detect seizure activity, give him stability and help his independence.
Registration for Walk MS Southeast Missouri will begin at noon Sunday, April 17, at Southeast Missouri State University Recreation Center-North, 750 New Madrid St. in Cape Girardeau. The event is free for children ages 2 to 12 and will teach them about diabetes, nutrition, how to be heart healthy and more. Free Self-Defense for Women classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at HealthPoint Fitness, 2126 Independence in Cape Girardeau. Black belt Doug Johnson of Moo Sul Kwan Martial Arts will be present to help teach self-defense tactics and techniques. The classes are for those 12 years old and older. Saint Francis Medical Center will host its ninth annual Heart to Heart Luncheon at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Ray's Plaza Banquet Center, 3257 William St. in Cape Girardeau.
The event will include information about physical changes that can affect women's heart health after menopause and how to decrease heart disease risks. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Adi Mehta, an endocrinologist who specializes in Type I and Type II diabetes, thyroid issues, reproductive endocrinology and women's health at the Cleveland Clinic, the nation's top cardiovascular hospital. Exhibits and free health screenings will be available before the presentation. Tickets for the event are $25 in advance or $30 at the door, and will include the keynote presentation, cardiovascular health information, door prizes and a heart-healthy lunch.
Sponsored tables cost $250 and include seating for eight and recognition during the program. Tickets can be purchased at sfmc.net/hearttoheart or at the Fitness Plus Service Desk at 150 S. Mount Auburn Road, Entrance 8, in Cape Girardeau. Proceeds from the event will go to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Patient Scholarship Fund at Saint Francis.
