The Heartland Writers Guild will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, 206 E. Washington St. in Jackson. Anyone interested in writing and getting published is invited to attend.
The Neal E. Boyd Endowed Scholarship in Performing Arts has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, according to a university news release. The fund was established by Boyd and two fraternity brothers. The scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled at Southeast majoring in performing arts with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Boyd earned two undergraduate degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in speech communications and political science from Southeast. He is a recipient of Southeast's Distinguished Service Award. Rhonda Young, teacher at Alma Schrader Elementary School in Cape Girardeau, is the American Legion Teacher of the Year for 2018, according to a recent news release.
Young graduated from Southeast Missouri State University and began teaching in Cape in 1999. In addition to her volunteer work, she has won the KFVS Heartland's Best Teacher award and the Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year award, according to the release.
The annual award is given at the Legion's March banquet and includes a check for $500 and the Teacher of the Year plaque. Any teacher can apply or be nominated.
