A town hall meeting is planned from 7 to 8:30 Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark St. in Cape Girardeau. The event will be presented by the League of Women Voters of Southeast Missouri, the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce and the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce. Local officials from Southeast Missouri will be present, including Jackson Mayor Dwain Hahs; Superintendent of Jackson Public Schools Dr. John Link; Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger; and Superintendent of Cape Girardeau Public Schools Dr. Jim Welker. The Oran Jaycees will host fish frys at 5 p.m. throughout February and March, including Feb. 12, 19 and 26, and March 4, 11, 18 and 25 at the Oran Jaycees, 200 N. Haw St. in Oran, Missouri. The meals will include U.S. pond-raised catfish fillets, fried chicken, hush puppies, slaw, homemade onion rings, fried biscuits, potato salad, baked beans and homemade macaroni and cheese. Dinner will cost $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6 to 12 and is free for children 5 and younger.
Discovery Playhouse will host a trivia night at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the Osage Centre, 1625 N. Kingshighway St. in Cape Girardeau. Registration will begin at 5:15 p.m., and the trivia will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Teams should have eight members, and preregistration costs $130. Registration at the door will be $160. The Dream Factory Craft Show will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Road in Cape Girardeau. A number of booths will be present, including Pink Zebra, Paparazzi Accessories, Perfectly Posh, The Decal Shoppe Inc. and more. The Deadly Duo of Sharon and Bill Hopkins will be present to sell and sign their original murder mystery novels as well.
The Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838 will host a Valentine's dinner and show at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838, 1049 N. Kingshighway St. in Cape Girardeau. The show will be a tribute to Johnny Cash and June Carter and will star Bill Forness, Brittany Sheffer and One More Round Band. Tickets bought in advance cost $23 for the dinner and show, and $15 for the show only. Dinner will be served from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 8 p.m.
Annual Valentine's Dinner planned
The third annual Valentine's at the Plaza dinner will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Ray's Plaza Banquet Center, 3257 William St. in Cape Girardeau. There will be a cash bar, and DJ Skyy Jammer will provide music entertainment. John Mark Photography also will be available to take photos for an added charge. Tickets bought in advance (ending on Feb. 12) cost $40 for a single; $75 for a couple; and $270 for a table of eight. The Knights of Columbus will present its annual Valentine's Day dinner and dance from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 28745 Highway 61 in Scott City. St. Joseph Home & School will host its 26th annual Sausage Breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, in the school gym, 606 Sycamore St. in Scott City. The menu will include sausage links, pancakes, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, mixed fruit, coffee and milk. Tickets will cost $7 for adults, $4 for children between ages 6 and 12, and free for children 5 and younger.
"A Night in Candyland" Father Daughter Dance is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Osage Centre, 1625 N. Kingshighway St. in Cape Girardeau. Tickets bought before Feb. 15 will be $25 per couple. Tickets purchased between Feb. 16 and 20 will be $30 per couple, and tickets purchased the day of the dance will be $35 per couple. Tickets for each additional daughter will cost $8. Pizza, hamburgers and other appetizers will be available throughout the evening, and Charlie's Music Revue will provide the music. The Scott County Women in Agriculture organization is offering a $750 scholarship to a 2016 high school graduate. To be eligible for the award, the applicant or applicant's family must be involved in farming or agribusiness in Scott County. The applicant is not required to major in agriculture. The deadline for the completed application is April 1. Candidates can fill out the form in ink or it can be printed from their computer. This spring, the Shelter Insurance Foundation will award a $2,000 scholarship to a graduate of Cape Central High School. The winner of the award will be selected by a committee of local high school officials and community leaders, and the recipient choice will be based on each applicant's scholastic achievements, education goals, citizenship, moral character and participation and leadership in school and community activities. The award is based on equal opportunity, and the name of the winner will be announced at the end of the school year. Applications and additional information will be available in early March and should be completed and returned to the school official serving on the selection committee before March 31.
