The Southeast Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a Sheltering Fundamentals course from 8 a.m. to noon July 15 at the Osage Centre. The course will train members of the community as American Red Cross disaster shelter workers, discuss different roles that need to be fulfilled within a shelter and give participants and volunteers experience with running a disaster shelter. The deadline to submit an application for the 2013 Saint Francis Foundation and Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarships has been extended to Friday. The program awards 23 scholarships up to $2,000 each annually to students pursuing health care-related careers. Applicants must have successfully completed one year of an accredited health care program and have at least a 3.0 grade-point average. Applicants must submit all required documentation and a completed application to the Foundation by Friday. Students are eligible to receive a scholarship for a maximum of two years. All applicants are considered regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, religion, ancestry, age, handicap or veteran status. A DVD "Stuttering and Your Child: Help for Parents" is available at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, Jackson Public Library, the Riverside Regional Library and the Sikeston Public Library in English and Spanish to help parents detect stuttering and take action toward helping their child. Produced by the not-for-profit Stuttering Foundation, the film describes what kinds of stuttering young children may exhibit, how parents can help at home and the role of a speech pathologist in evaluating and treating children who stutter. The Safe House for Women will present the Gillam Family Illusions magic show at 6 p.m. July 18 at the Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School auditorium. This family-friendly event is appropriate for all ages and will benefit the Safe House for Women. The Gillam Family has been performing magic and illusion shows around the country for two decades. Their high-energy, fun-filled, audience-driven show is sure to be a family favorite. Tickets are $5 for children ages 12 and under, $10 for ages 13 and older. The deadline to nominate a nurse to be honored as a 2013 March of Dimes Nurse of the Year is today. The Missouri Chapter of March of Dimes has been accepting nominations for the annual event since early May, and the organization will honor nurses who exemplify an extraordinary level of patient care, compassion and customer service. About 20 nurses will be honored at a special awards gala on Nov. 9 at the Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis. The 14th annual Friedheim Fun Fest will be held July 13 in Friedheim, Mo., across from Trinity Lutheran Church. This year's Fun Fest is being held to benefit the Missouri Mission of Mercy and the Waylon Friese Scholarship. The first $500 raised will go to the Friese scholarship and the remainder will go to Missouri Mission of Mercy.
