Fried chicken dinner served in Jackson
The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary Relay for Life team and St. Ann's Ladies Sodality will serve a fried chicken dinner today at Immaculate Conception Parish Center in Jackson. Food will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dinner is fried chicken with all the trimmings. Carry-outs will be available. This is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and Cape County Relay for Life, which is scheduled for June 14 at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau.

Saint Francis Medical Center will offer the Freedom from Smoking program in Sikeston, Mo., beginning Tuesday. This program is for anyone who is ready to quit smoking or using smokeless tobacco and needs help. Classes meet once a week for six weeks beginning Tuesday. Classes will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Scott County Health Department, 102 Grove Estates Court. Run/Ride for Ragan event to be Saturday
The first annual Run-Ride for Ragan, a fundraising biathlon in honor of Ragan Ward Neilson, will be Saturday. Ragan, a Cape Girardeau native and daughter of Dr. Robert and Barb Ward, lost her battle with stage-four triple-negative breast cancer Oct. 29, 2007. The event will begin at the Boardman/Hutson Pavilion in Downtown Cape Girardeau. The 1-mile Memory/Honor Walk will start at 7 a.m., with the biathlon -- a 5K run and 17-mile bike ride -- starting at 8 a.m. All proceeds will benefit local and national organizations that provide breast cancer research, as well as help provide services to those women with breast cancer that can't afford them. Fall carnival for kids at Scott City Parks
The Scott City Community Interactive Parks Program will be hosting a fall carnival for kids. The carnival will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Scott City Park. The event will have more than 30 booths from games to health awareness and activities all day. There will be hay rides, small firetruck rides, a real and model plane show, DJ with Doc Dave, a jump house and lots of candy. Red Cross to hold wilderness training
The American Red Cross will hold wilderness first aid and rescue training from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 14. The training sessions will be held at the Red Cross office at 2430 Myra Drive in Cape Girardeau. Topics to be covered will include primary and secondary assessments; head, brain, neck and spinal injuries; heat-related emergencies and hypothermia; altitude-related illnesses, allergies and anaphylaxis; bone and joint injuries and burns, wounds and infections.
