Members of the Jackson High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America will be collecting cans from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday for Trick or Treat for Cans for the Jackson Ministerial Alliance. FBLA members will be going door to door for cans of food to be donated to the food pantry. The food pantry provides food to local families in crisis.
Volunteers with Missouri CLAIM, a government-sponsored Medicare counseling service, will offer free expert help from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Jackson Senior Center, 2690 Traveler's Way in Jackson. Cape County Private Ambulance Service recently launched HeartHands, a campaign urging the training and use of compression-only CPR. HeartHands presentations are available through the ambulance service. Presentations are free and can be scheduled by contacting Darick Day at 335-2191.
SoutheastHEALTH Foundation will be hosting a mother/daughter princess tea party from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 3 in the Mississippi Room at Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. An afternoon session has already sold out. Tickets are $15 per person or $200 for a reserved "royal table." Seating is limited. Grandmothers, aunts and fairy godmothers are all welcome. Proceeds will benefit Southeast Pediatrics and Obstetrics. St. Joseph Parish of Apple Creek in Perryville, Mo., is hosting its fall festival and dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4. The VFW Post 3838 of Cape Girardeau will host a benefit for Ella Mae Enderle at 5 p.m. Nov. 17. The event will include a dinner, silent auction, raffle, music and more. Enderle was recently diagnosed with histiocytosis and proceeds will help with medical expenses.
The Franklin County Honor Flight benefit dance is scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall 3838 in Cape Girardeau. Mitch and Doug will provide music. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Franklin County Honor Flight is a volunteer driven, not-for-profit organization that flies veterans to Washington D.C. to see the war memorials. Old Town Cape announced the release of its 2012 Christmas ornament depicting a Mississippi riverboat. The 2012 ornament is a limited edition, numbered piece produced by Hestia and is the 16th in a series. The Mississippi River is one of the defining characteristics of downtown and is a point of interest in the Old Town Cape District. The city of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation to assist with improving the city's tree resources. The funding will be used to provide a tree survey for Capaha Park and public education regarding the benefit of trees to the community. There will be three, free, public workshops themed "For the Love of Trees." Workshops will be Feb. 2, March 2 and April 6. The cost to attend is $15 to cover materials. The city of Cape Girardeau has added dedicated bicycle lanes and striped approximately 16 miles of city streets. Bicycle lanes are dedicated striping on the right side of the road. Motorists are not to drive or park on striped bicycle lanes. Sharrows are reflective signs in the center of travel lanes to signify areas where bicycles and cars should take care and share the road. Chaffee Christmas parade
The Chaffee Chamber of Commerce announced the 2012 Christmas parade will start at 1 p.m. Dec 1. This year's theme is "A Game Show Christmas." The parade begins at the Head Start parking lot on N. SoutheastHEALTH Cancer Center seminars
The SoutheastHEALTH Cancer Center will host a multiple myeloma, leukemia and lymphoma seminar from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday. Speakers will include a patient who will discuss his journey with multiple myeloma as well as representatives from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society.
