From the Pulpit: The cowboy way

The Rev. Jim Matthews, 54, of Cape County Cowboy Church was born and raised in Sikeston, Mo. He became the pastor of the church when it began in January 2004. He enjoys hunting and fishing on his spare time. Besides being a pastor he also trains and shows quarter horses. Matthews has been a member of a church all his life and has served as a pastor for 34 years. Jim said his favorite part of being a pastor is "watching people grow in their faith and helping start other churches."

How long have you been a member of the Southern Baptist faith?

Since placing my faith in Christ as a young boy.

What drew you to serve the church in a leadership role?

During camp, at age 11, I felt God calling me to serve him, even though I didn't understand all that that entailed. God never let me forget that prayer. During my teen years, God began clarifying his specific call on my life.

What education/background/studies did you go through to become a pastor?

I went to college and seminary, but the greatest studies have always come from studying God, his word and people.

What do you think makes this church special?

All churches are unique and special, but the thing that separates us from most is that we seek to worship, minister and function not only in a way that honors our Lord, but also in a way that appeals to those who love and long for the cowboy way of life.

What's your favorite verse and why?

Nehemiah 8:10, "The joy of the Lord is your strength." When I find myself walking in his lordship, I have found that he always brings joy, no matter what the circumstances.

What program have you done with Cape County Cowboy Church that you are proud of and why?

My personal favorite is our church starting other cowboy churches in Missouri and Illinois.

What events or occasions does your church have coming up?

Like most churches the upcoming holidays are filled with special times of worship and fellowship. Our church Christmas program "Christmas Radio" is at 7 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. Dec. 13. Our children and their families will be celebrating Christmas in a local barn at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13.

What's your favorite day of the week and why?

Any day ending with a Y. I am just glad to be alive and be able to witness the amazing work of our God.

Do you have a prayer, psalm or verse you would like to give our readers?

Psalms 48:1, "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised."
