Southeast Missouri Stone Co. is part of the Delta Companies' family of businesses. Delta Companies Inc., one of the larges providers of construction materials and services in the Midwest, operates businesses in three states, Illinois, Arkansas and Missouri. it has been part of Cape Girardeau since the 1920s when Edward Regenhardt and William H. Harrison founded a small asphalt company on the south side of town. By the 1950s, it was the largest paving company in the Midwest. In 1964, it established Southeast Missouri Stone Co. located on Marquette Drive. Southeast Missouri Stone quickly became a flagship company for Delta.
Southeast Missouri Stone is found in most major building projects in Cape Girardeau and surrounding areas. Even before 1964, the company supplied materials for the construction of Academic Hall and other building projects at Southeast Missouri State University. Southeast Missouri Stone originated to provide aggregates for the Interstate 55 project. Most recently, it has supplied materials for the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge and the new federal courthouse and stone for the asphalt paving projects in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
Southeast Missouri Stone Co. produces in excess of 1 million tons of aggregates per year. It removes the aggregates from the quarry through engineered blasting and hauls it to on-site crushers in 60-ton haul trucks.
Southeast Missouri Stone has an exceptional work force. Most of the employees have been with the company more than 20 years and the average length of service is more than 18 years. Most remarkable is the focus the employees have on safety.
Southeast Missouri Stone was recently honored for its outstanding mining operations and safety record with the Missouri Limestone Producers Association's prestigious 2006 Hillenkamp-Rush Memorial Safety Award. This marks the fifth time Southeast Missouri Stone has received this award. It also received two Special Safety Commendations -- one for having no lost-time accidents for 13 consecutive years and another for working 1,000,000 man-hours without a lost-time injury.
Additionally, SEMO Stone received recognition for best safety performance for their size category. Remarkable, considering that the aggregate products are produced in an industry that involves large mobile construction equipment, explosives and crushing plants.
