Bob and Alene Matthews of Cape Girardeau have been volunteering at Southeast Missouri Hospital since 1993. Bob Matthews transports from the registration desk to their rooms and also serves as a greeter in the main lobby. Alene Matthews supervises the cardiothoracic intensive care waiting room and volunteers at the surgical waiting room two daysa week. Bob Matthews said they volunteer because he was privileged to work at a business that was able to provide a comfortable living for his family; when he retired he and Alene decided to do something to give back. The Matthews said they love what they do because of the opportunity to reach out to hurting individuals in an effort to help make their day a little bit better. They also hope to inspire others to become interested in volunteering.
