Are you a fan of online music? The music sites get better and savvier every day. Some of the best sites and sounds of the Web were highlighted in the 3rd annual Yahoo! Internet Life Online Music Awards, which were presented last week.

I'm going to take a look at some of the winners, but I encourage you to check out all the nominees.

www.yilmusicawards.com

The awards were presented live at Studio 54 in New York City. If you missed the Webcast, you can watch it again. Just pick your connection speed. There are several live performances, including one from the 2000 Online Music Pioneer Award winner, David Bowie.

This musical icon has been highly wired since the mid-1980s. His Bowienet functions as his official site and fan community, where he shares diary entries and music exclusives such as rare recordings and videos.

It also won the top award for Best Artist Site.

There's lots for guests to see, but paying members get such perks as free concerts, chats with the man himself, and even a new CD available online only. You can view his artwork. You can even buy Internet service from this guy.

But back to the other online music award winners. Click on each category to see the winner and the four other nominated sites.

Winner of the best overall music site is SonicNet.

www.sonicnet.com

SonicNet boasts of a mission to ignite, inspire and nurture the passion for music that fans of all genres share. It has muscle behind its promise. SonicNet has 18 music Web site destinations, including MTV and VH1.

This is really a gigantic site that offers something for everyone. There's music news, reviews, events, downloads, video, music directories and even radio. It's easy to find your favorite artist or you can search by genre.

You can be a guest DJ to share your favorite music or download new music into your computer. (If the courts haven't outlawed it by now.)

You can also subscribe to e-mail info on your favorite artists, including their news, tour dates and new releases.

The 10 main music categories include: rock, pop, world/international, dance/electronic, jazz, classical, R&B/soul, hip-hop/rap, blues/folk and country. Hey, this is a great music site!!!

OK, now a brief rundown on the other winners:

www.billboard.com

This site wins the nod as the Best Music News Site. There is lots to read here, including all the recent fallout on the court ruling to take down Napster because it allows users to share copyrighted music. The Recording Industry Association of America filed the suit. Billboard gives you great info on the top bands and their music -- both on the Web and off. I especially liked the chart rewind to 1, 5 and 10 years ago today.

This site won the Best Label Award, passing a lot of better-known labels. Their site is very slick, but I must admit I knew few (OK, none) of the bands. Am I that old? Don't answer that.

The best fan site is brought to you by Nine Inch Nails.

www.9inchnails.com

The clever categories certainly live up to the Painful Convictions theme, such as Lose Me, Hate Me, Smash Me and Erase Me. I particularly liked the "Dictionary" database under the category of Discussion. It told me everything about the band -- the people they know, the places they go, and their lyrics and songs.

The Best Internet-Only Album can be found at:

www.aimeemann.com

I must say the Internet is really a great medium for artists such as Aimee Mann to get their message and music out if they can only be innovative enough to be heard in the crowd.

The Best Internet Song Award goes to Prince. (Is he Prince again, instead of Symbol-boy?)

www.love4oneanother.com

The Best Reference Site award goes to the Ultimate Band List. I've been there many times, and it's very extensive.

www.ubl.com

It's easy to find an artist or even hear music news. You can find radio stations, bulletin boards, record labels, magazines or online events. You can upload songs or check out UBL's Top 100 artists, based on surfers' requests. This week's winner is Eminem, followed by Korn, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and Limp Bizkit. Quite a range.

Winner of the Best Unsigned Band on the Internet is Red Delicious, an alternative band from the United Kingdom. I wonder if someone rushed out to sign the group after the awards ceremony?

Finally, the last category is Best Live Music Event.

www.mcy.com

Not surprisingly, the winner is Paul McCartney's Webcast from Liverpool's Cavern Club, the place where it all began for the Beatles nearly 40 years ago. The Webcast will be repeated today and Aug. 10, for a fee of course. Other artists are also taking advantage of Webcast concerts on this portal site, including Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. It's like pay-per-view from your computer.

See you in Cyberspace.
