Church plans holiday bazaar for today

Maple United Methodist Church, 2441 Jean Ann Drive, will have its annual holiday bazaar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. There will be many homemade items, crafts and a bake sale. Lunch will be served.

Characterization to be presented by professor

Dr. Robert Hamblin, English professor and head of the Faulkner Center at Southeast Missouri State University, will present a characterization of Clarence Jordan at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Cape Girardeau. Jordan, a Baptist minister, founded Koinonia Farm near Americus, Ga. He established an interracial community in the segregated South. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets at 200 Broadway (northeast rear door).

Christian Women'sluncheon set for Monday

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Fellowship Baptist Church of Sikeston will host the Christian Women's luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Monday. Carol Johnson, a Bible teacher and the first CWL chairman, will be the featured speaker. To register, contact Kathy Cullins at 573-471-5817.

Lecture on Christianity and Islam to be given

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dr. Alvin Schmidt, professor emeritus of sociology at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., will give a PowerPoint presentation on Christianity and Islam in the University Center Ballroom at Southeast Missouri State University. A question-and-answer period will follow his lecture. The presentation is sponsored by the Lutheran Student Fellowship of Lutheran Chapel of Hope and is open to the campus community and to the public. Contact the Rev. David V. Support group to meet at St. Paul Lutheran Church

GriefShare, a Christian-based recovery seminar and support group for those who have lost a loved one in death, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 223 W. Adams St. in Jackson, room 202 in the education building. This week's topic is "The Journey of Grief." For information, call the church at 243-2236.

Rhema Word Ministries will host a special screening of "Tapestry of Shadows" at 7 p.m. Friday at 750 N. Mount Auburn Road. The movie stars its writer-director, David Martyn Conley, a native of St. Louis where the movie was filmed. "Tapestry of Shadows" is about choosing between vengeance and virtue, about tragedy and triumph in an urban ministry setting. For tickets, call Lisa Lane at 332-1333 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Special rates are available for families and groups.

Latin Masses available locally at two churches

Catholics who want to attend a Tridentine Latin Mass no longer have to drive to St. Louis. Through November and in other odd-numbered months, Latin Mass is said at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at St. Maurus Parish in Biehle, Mo. On even-numbered months, it will be said at the 11:15 a.m. Sunday service at St. Joseph Parish in Apple Creek. The Rev. Anthony A. Dattilo is pastor of both parishes and will celebrate the Latin Masses. English Masses will still be said at regular times; the Latin Mass is an added one, Dattilo said. Priests who wish to say the Latin Mass no longer have to receive permission from their bishop, according to a recent pronouncement from Pope Benedict XVI.

Thanksgiving services scheduled by churches

  • The Jackson Ministerial Alliance will hold its Thanksgiving service at 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at the First General Baptist church on South Farmington Road. The Rev. Barry Winders of Wesley United Methodist Church in Fruitland will bring the message. The offering will go to support the Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
  • First Presbyterian Church at Broadway and Lorimier Street in Cape Girardeau will observe Thanksgiving at the 10:45 a.m. service Nov. 18. The Rev. Paul Kabo's sermon will be entitled "The Times of Gratitude." Special Thanksgiving music will be provided by the choir. All are invited to worship and attend the Thanksgiving dinner in the fellowship hall following the service.

Churches to honor veterans at services

  • The congregation of Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church will recognize and honor the U.S. military at the 9 a.m. service Sunday. Photographs of family and friends who are veterans or are presently serving in the military will be displayed. The special service will include presentation of colors and performance of a ceremonial honor guard by the Trail of Tears Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and special music by the Hobbs Chapel choir.
  • First Pentecostal Church, 3054 Lexington Ave., will honor veterans at the 11 a.m. service with a photo display, video presentation, a flag corps presentation by Pre-Teen Praise and a call of honor naming all veterans who have served from 1919 to the present and who are connected with the church. Special speaker will be Robert Bentley, a retired missionary to Russia. The public is welcome.

Bible translation banquet to be held Thursday

A Wycliffe Associates banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Drury Lodge at Cape Girardeau. Andy Peck, programming manager of Wycliffe Bible Translators will be the guest speaker. Wycliffe Associates is a ministry supporting the work of Bible translation around the world. It sent more than 1,300 volunteers to 36 countries in 2006. Peck will speak about his experiences and his ability to use his love for computers to help get the Bible in the hands of people who speak many languages. For complimentary tickets, call 334-9062.

Several events planned this week at First Baptist

This is the final week to bring in Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. The continuing study of "God's Creation" in The Gathering begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with Tyler Tankersley. This Sunday's study is "Our Covenant with Creation." The Rev. Mike Shupert will deliver the sermon, "How to Say Thanks," a look at Paul's thank-yous, second in the ThanksLiving series Sunday at the 10:45 a.m. service. Wednesday activities, all at 6:15 p.m., are: adult Bible study with Dr. Ron Winstead, Luke Chapter 4; youth Bible study with Tyler Tankersley; and Kids Club with Whitney Thomason. The church will host the Central Middle School Shere Khan music concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
