Designed to hold back a flood of 54 feet at Cape Girardeau, construction of the floodwall here began in 1956. This photo, taken in June 1957, shows part of the massive foundation that anchors the floodwall. It was taken south of the old Frisco freight depot, near William Streeet. The depot can be seen at the left edge of the photograph. The concrete wall was completed in 1958, but the entire flood-control system wasn't finished until 1964. (G.D.
