Gospel quartet to perform in Sikeston

The Dixie Melody Boys will be featured at 6 p.m. Oct 28 at the Old Bethel Baptist Church in Sikeston, Mo. Since it formed nearly four decades ago, the Kinston, N.C.-based quartet has enjoyed tremendous success, including a Grammy nomination. The quartet is led by 45-year veteran and recent Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee Ed O'Neal.

Anniversary service set at New Life Gospel

New Life Gospel Center, 401 Oak St. in Scott City will celebrate its 47th anniversary at the 11 a.m. service Sunday. Lunch will be served after the service. Everyone is welcome.

Events planned at First Baptist in Cape

First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau will feature the sermon "The Meaning of Life" (Luke 6), from the Rev. Mike Shupert on Sunday. This will be third in the series "Stories (What's Yours?)." The following activities will be held Wednesday, all at 6:15 p.m.:

  • Parenting seminar with Shupert
  • Kids' Club -- (for ages 4 through fifth grade) with Whitney Thomason
  • Adult Bible study with Dr. Ron Winstead: A study of Luke
  • Youth Bible Study with Tyler Tankersley.

'Trunk or Treat' 2007 events scheduled

  • Mount Auburn Christian Church, 930 N. Mount Auburn Road, will once again have "Trunk or Treat," offering treats, food, games and pictures from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Come in costume and have fun.
  • The First Baptist Church, 212 S. High St. in Jackson, will host a "Trunk or Treat" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. The event is for the whole family. There will be candy to collect, photos taken and games to play.
  • Maple United Methodist Church, 2441 Jean Ann Drive, is sponsoring its first "Trunk or Treat" from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 27. There will be "trunk-or-treating," a bouncy house, and an after-dark outdoor movie theater playing "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and lots more fun. A chili supper will be served for a small fee to raise money for the building expansion fund. Children younger than 11 eat free.

Trinity Lutheran to hold health fair Oct. 27

Trinity Lutheran Church, 100 N. Frederick St., will hold a free health fair in cooperation with Southeast Missouri Hospital from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 27. Screenings will be available for eyes, lungs, weight, body mass index, blood sugar, blood pressure, bone density, dental health, memory, cholesterol (appointment is recommended along with a 10-hour fast), stroke (an appointment is recommended and a cholesterol panel should be done first), and hearing. Health professionals will give presentations on stroke, organic foods, diet, medication counseling, advance directives and living wills. Reformation Day service at First Presbyterian

First Presbyterian Church, at Broadway and Lorimier Street, will have a special Reformation service at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 28. John Calvin's Geneva Liturgy from the 1500s will be used. The service will last one hour. Luther's Theses will be posted on the doors of the church. Decorations will show the colors of John Calvin's Geneva. Visits by "early reformers" are anticipated: Martin Luther, John Calvin and possibly John Knox. Hymns will be Reformation hymns, a string quintet will participate and the choir will sing special anthems.

Altenburg to hold fall rally Sunday

The fall rally for the Altenburg Zone of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League will be held Sunday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Frohna, Mo. Registration will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m., with the rally beginning at 1. The guest speaker is the Rev. Eugene Stueve, who has served in the Missouri District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and at Zion Lutheran Church in Macon, Mo., for the past 30 years. The topic for the fall rally will be "Rest On Christ the King," focusing on Psalm 31:1-3. This is the theme for the 2006-2008 LWML biennium. An ingathering will include monetary donations as well as packaged underwear for "Undie Sunday," a project to benefit destitute people in Latvia, Liberia, Nicaragua and other countries. New underwear of all sizes will be accepted. A light meal will be served after the rally.

'Day of Recollection' held at St. Vincent

St. Vincent Council of Catholic Women sponsored a "Day of Recollection" Oct. 13 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, with the Rev. David Hulshof presiding. The morning topic was "Walking Along with Christ," about how to be involved with the walk to Emmaus after the Resurrection of Christ. The afternoon topic was "Forms of Prayer." The retreat was closed with the recitation of the rosary led by Pat Harrison, followed by a benediction from Hulshof.

Halloween alternative party held in Scott City

First Assembly of God, 312 Dearborn St. in Scott City will hold a Halloween alternative party from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 in the church gym. Several churches will sponsor this free event, which features carnival-type activities and lots of candy. The party offers children of all ages a safe alternative to trick-or-treating.
