Vernon Shell was born on a farm in Glen Allen, and spent 94 of his 103 years there, raising crops, cattle and his family. Shell celebrated his 103rd birthday March 27 at El Nathan Assisted Living Center with a cake decorated with a photo of him as a young farmer catching a young calf. His wife Oletha died in 2000, and he came to live at El Nathan in 2002. Administrator Beverly McWilson said Shell still enjoys eating a big farm breakfast every morning. He likes to sit out on the porch when the weather is nice and watch McWilson's husband mow the yard.
