Cape students earn awards at exhibition

Cape Girardeau Central High School senior Brooke Baugher won Best in Show in the High School Art Exhibition at River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University for her fibers artwork. Of the 40 awards given, Central High School students won nine while exhibiting 26 pieces. The Alternative Education Center earned one while exhibiting three pieces. Of the eight first-place awards, Central students took home four. Ashley Cusick, a junior, won five awards: three first places, an honorable mention and the Art Academy Award. Winning the Art Academy Award qualifies her to create a piece of art that will be photographed and featured on the poster for the 2013 High School Art Exhibit poster. Other awards presented to Cape Girardeau students were: ceramics, Ashley Cusick (first and honorable mention), Tevin Roper (second), Nancy Mardanova (third); fibers, Laurel Kasten (third); printmaking, Chelsea Willet (first), Keneen Abraham (third); sculpture, Ashley Cusick (first); mixed media, Ashley Cusick (first), Lauren Lamb (honorable mention).

Poplar Bluff senior receives scholarship

Senior Whitney Stewart of Poplar Bluff High School was the winner of the Montgomery Bank Scholarship. The scholarship was presented as part of the Sikeston Depot Museum's 36th annual Regional High School Student Art Show.

Students named to All-State Band, Choir

Perryville High School senior Gabriel Lockhart, junior Nate Kinnison and senior Josh Stevens were recently named to the All-State Band and Choir, which rehearsed and performed at Tan-Tar-A Resort in January. Lockhart, who plays clarinet, was accepted into the All-State Band. He is the son of Angela Lockhart and Michael Lockhart, both of Perryville. He has played clarinet since the sixth grade. His band director at Perryville High School is Jay Peters. Kinnison, a tenor, has been a member of choir since the eighth grade. Stevens, who sings bass, has been a member of choir since ninth grade. Stevens' and Kinnison's choir director at Perryville High School is Terry Edwards.
