Hannah Trautman and Savannah Lively received their Girl Scout Bronze Award for their storm drain stenciling project. After learning chemicals, cigarette butts, paint, trash and yard wastes take this path into waterways, spoiling them for people and wildlife, Hannah and Savannah wanted to raise the community awareness that only rainwater belongs in storm drains. They cleaned up around each drain before stenciling with the supplies and environmentally safe paint supplied by the Cape Girardeau Public Works Department.

Dentist wins leader award

Dr. Ross Bennett, a general dentist in Cape Girardeau, received Nov. 4 the Outstanding New Dental Leader Award at the 2011 Missouri Dental Association House of Delegates. He was recognized for his service and leadership as a "new dentist," that is, one who has practiced fewer than 10 years.

Team takes volleyball championship

Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Jackson took first place at the 7th Grade Parochial League End of the Season Tournament in October. The players on the team were Allie Ziegler, Samantha Brennan, Katie Hanners, Rachel Conrad, Syndey Newell, Taylor Barnes, Brianna Courtney, Emmerson Outman, Shannon Beussink, Allyson Jansen, Taylor Allen, Abby Renaud, Abby Glastetter and Lizzie Spoooler.

Re-entry manager receives award

Tina Waldron, re-entry manager for the Missouri Department of Corrections, received the Elaine Aber Humanitarian Award for the department's ongoing commitment to the Missouri Re-entry Process. She was given the award by the Missouri Association for Social Welfare on Nov. 4 at the association's 111th conference at Lake of the Ozarks.
