Evening Optimists endow arts scholarship

The Cape Evening Optimists recently endowed a scholarship for a performing arts student at Southeast Missouri State University. The scholarship will be awarded to one student a semester who will be required to teach a 75-minute performing arts class once a week for junior high school students. Recipients will be required to have completed 60 hours of classes and have an overall GPA of 2.5 and a 3.0 GPA in performing arts classes.

Art students win prizes at Paducah Art Show

Three private art students studying under Brenda Seyer received awards at the 72nd annual Women's Club of Paducah Art Show. The winners are Katie Walton, first place in grades six through eight with a batik; Elizabeth Rutherford, second place in grades three through five for drawing; and Mackenzie Hill, third place in grades six through eight for scratchboard.

Casting call goes out for local movie 'Fire Lily'

Unpaid extras and day players are needed for a local film production, "Fire Lily," an independent film directed by Southeast Missouri State University theater and dance department chair Dr. Kenn Stilson that tells the story of a woman trapped in a small-town life she wants to escape. Roles for men and women from teens to age 30 and up are available. Filming will occur in and around Cape Girardeau June 14 to July 12. For more information, call (573) 986-6818.

City of Roses festival dates announced

Organizers of the City of Roses Music Festival have announced the dates for this year's festival, Sept. 7 and 8, in downtown Cape Girardeau. Gates will open at 6 p.m. Sept. 7 and 3 p.m. Sept. 8. Some acts have already been booked for the festival, including Kimberley Dahme and Peter Karp. Bands and volunteers are also being accepted. Valle house presents French veillee

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- The historic Felix Valle house in Ste. Genevieve will hold its annual French veillee, a re-creation of an early 1800s summer French social gathering, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Local student selected for Fine Arts Academy

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Jackson High School student Grace Blades has been selected for participation in the Missouri Fine Arts Academy program this summer. The program will take place on the campus of Missouri State University, with almost 200 visual and performing artists from Missouri high schools participating.
