The gadwall is a North American duck slightly smaller than the mallard. It is a migratory duck that winters across most of the southern half of the United States and all of Mexico.
The gadwall is a dabbling duck that likes to feed in shallow water about 14 inches deep. It is often found feeding in the company of mallards and shoveler ducks. It is fun to watch these ducks feed. The head and about half of the duck goes underwater while the tail end sticks up in the air.
The gadwall's diet consists mainly of aquatic vegetation.
I spooked this one while it was swimming among weeds in a flooded field.
