LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Backstage it was just like the Miss America contest: Women were having their hair, nails and makeup done for their moment in the spotlight.
But as the eight contestants came out on stage for the annual Arkansas Health Care Association nursing home queen pageant Thursday, it was with canes, wheelchairs and walkers. All but two were over 80.
After an announcer questioned each contestant, the judges put in their votes, and 95-year-old Clara Fay Bennett, wearing a floor-length, black sequined gown, was crowned queen.
"I've done a lot of things in my life," Bennett said. "No use getting nervous about this. I'm excited. Wouldn't anybody be?"
Two of Bennett's three sons and her nurse, Holly Morgan, were there to applaud her victory.
