Willy Jak's One Year Anniversary Weekend started on Friday night, April 26. Carbondale born band, Clean Ray, kicked off the festivities with some pulse-pounding rhythms and funky lyrics. They are quite a unique band who puts on an entertaining show with 2 vocalists, one of which plays percussion along with the drummer, and the keyboardist who, while he's not banging on the keys, picks up his sax to add a jazzy vibe.

Lead man Arlin Peebles, keeps the show going, not only with his eccletic stage performance, but with his Zack de la Rocha-like voice and wild hair to boot. We must give credit to Jason Hill, vocalist/drummer, for his Missouri shirt, we appreciate his extra effort to support our state.

Not only will you remember Clean Ray's performance and style, but their most popular tune, Pet Pigeon, which was cited as an arousing, shout-along number about a janitor and his adopted bird, with catchy beats and lyrics that command attention and make you want to jump around.

For the last half of the night, Shades of Gray took the stage. Lead singer, Todd Hanson has the ability to work the crowd with his soulful sound and Ed Vedder style. With a little help from their good luck charm, Arlo, the stuffed Duck, this band from Illinois delivers original music that makes you want to sing.

When you listen to Shades of Gray, it feels like they are singing and playing just for you. Especially when Todd and Casey, one of the two guitarist, slows down the pace and plays Daniel, an Elton John tune or when they touch their fans by singing their September 11th Dedication song. Shades of Gray can change tunes and tempos with each song which keeps the crowd on their toes, wanting to know what's next and screaming for more. Shades of Gray has released an untitled CD and will be recording another one within a couple months. You can also catch them in Carbondale playing with bands such as Clean Ray, Spittshine, and The Plus. If you ever get a chance, Shades of Gray will make it worth your while.
