:As he prepares to open up the 2007 River City Music Festival, our esteemed mayor Jay Knudtson gave us his playlist for the inaugural edition of SE Live, in no particular order.
No. 1 "Old Man," Neil Young
I was first introduced to 'Neil' in High School and became a huge fan. I've since learned that Neil and I are very different politically, but it didn't seem to matter back then.
No. 2 "Raspberry Beret," Prince
While living in Minneapolis in the 1980s we were all caught up in the whole Prince movement. I resisted for a while until I attended a sell-out show at the First Avenue club in downtown Minneapolis and Prince belted out this great hit -- like him or hate him, he had a huge impact on music!
No. 3 "She talks to Angels," The Black Crowes
In a small bar in Northern Minnesota, my brother, Jimmy, and I plugged numerous quarters into a juke box and played this song over and over. It became one of our favorite anthems.
No. 4 "You Shook Me All Night Long," AC/DC
Perhaps one of the greatest sports warm-up songs ever. If you can't get fired up to this song, you best give it up. In addition, I first learned to play 'air guitar' to this song and have passed a long the talent to my son, Gunnar!
No. 5 "Copperhead Road," Steve Earl
While attending Biketoberfest in Daytona in 1998, this became our theme song. My good friend, Dr. Jay Sheets, and my brother, Jimmy, rocked out to this song while driving our Harley's around the Daytona Beach area.
Honorable mention:
No. 6 ? "Rock Star" ? Nickelback
"Chosen because I think this song contains hysterical lyrics that are, unfortunately, reflective of the crazy world that we live in today. In a world that is more infatuated with the exploits of Paris Hilton than the real challenges that are facing our nation, I think it's good to laugh at ourselves and songs like this ... not mention, Nickelback Rocks!"
