Although a few ice storms have made their way through the area this month, spreading havoc and causing several thousands to lose power, it seems Mother Nature herself cannot contend with the local good will.

Schock's Pub in Scott City is hosting an American Red Cross fundraiser for victims of this month's winter storms Saturday. Live music begins at 8 p.m., and a chili dinner will be provided by the Scott City Kiwanis. Jennifer Cabaniss, marketing director of Schock's Pub, said organizers Richard "Lump" Vandeven, herself and pub owner Paul Schock are hoping Saturday's benefit brings help to the many who need it.

"Our goal is to raise as much money as possible so the Red Cross can distribute it to the winter storm victims as they see fit," Cabaniss said "We all know someone who was affected by these storms in one way or another ... either loss of power or damaged vehicles and homes. Schock's Pub not only strives to support the local music scene, but the local community as a whole."

The area's local musicians are also showing their support, with several local bands playing for donations including The Futz and Fill.

"We're just happy we could do something like this to help these people," said Fill bassist Wes Ables. "I live downtown and never lost power, so I know how lucky I am. Some of these people lost power for weeks ... some lost more than that. We're talking money, cars, houses, things like that. Some were in the hospital. So for us to go and play in Scott City and raise a little money for them with our jazz funk ... it ain't no thing for us, man."
